Ground breaking on the Spier Family Splash Park will begin in Spring 2023 with a June completion. The opening is slated to coincide with summer enjoyment by members and campers alike and will provide exciting aquatics experiences that people will not be able to experience elsewhere in Foxboro or the surrounding communities.

The Splash Park project is part of the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Impact Campaign which celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Y is committed to raising $1.5 million for their Impact Campaign and have raised just over $1 million to-date, including Greg and Kathy Spier’s total pledge of $250,000.

“Our YMCA is so grateful for the decades of dedication, passion and support that the Spier Family and the Spier Family Foundation has bestowed upon us. It’s truly incredible,” said Jim Downs, CEO of the Hockomock Area YMCA. “The impact of their generosity can be felt throughout Foxboro and beyond and is truly a ripple effect of support that spreads miles and generations.”

The Spier family’s impact at the Hockomock Y and the local community runs deep. Their legacy at the Hockomock YMCA includes the naming of the indoor and outdoor aquatics centers at the Y’s Invensys Foxboro Branch, along with Greg and Kathy’s parents, Sonja and the late Alex Spier.

The Spier Family’s generosity also includes the Spier Family Splash program which offers free lessons to Foxboro students in grades K-2 to learn to swim, as well as dedicated philanthropic support to other YMCA initiatives including the Reach Out Campaign and Food Access Program. The Spier Family and their foundation sponsors the Y’s Spier Family Kindness for Kids 5K & Family Day, a day that celebrates and reinforces the Y’s focus on healthy living and commitment to raise funds for the Food Access initiative.

“My dad always talked about wanting to leave the world a better place than he found it. That’s why he and my mom, and Kathy and I, are such passionate supporters of the Hockomock Area YMCA,” shared Greg Spier. “We continue to see firsthand the impact our Y provides every day to strengthening families and communities. This splash park will create a safe and fun destination for children and families to create memories that will last a lifetime.”

“Please consider a gift and we will proudly match it, up to $100,000. The challenge will run February 13th through April 15th,” says Kathy Spier. “Thank you in advance from the bottom of our hearts for making a gift to this exciting project for our YMCA and our community.”

Shoot for Scholarships Fundraiser

Kids Helping Kids

Sports enthusiasts of all ages and abilities are learning the value of social responsibility through our Shoot for Scholarships Fundraiser in our Sports department!

At the Y, we believe in the potential of all kids. And that all kids should have the opportunity to grow and learn at the Y, regardless of ability to pay. Not enrolled today in a sports class or league? That’s not a problem, as everyone is eligible to participate.

Children in our sports classes and leagues will have the opportunity to shoot free throws to raise money for our Y’s annual Reach Out Campaign.

In 2022, the Reach Out Campaign provided over $2.7 million in scholarships and program subsidies so that individuals and families can experience the YMCA regardless of financial ability.

“The Hockomock YMCA has been a blessing to us. If it were not for all the donations we would not be able to send our children to the Y. Even a small amount can make a difference. You can help children and families like us.” – scholarship recipient

HOW TO JOIN:

Pick up a pledge sheet and log from your sports coach at the Y.
Ask family and friends if they will make a donation to sponsor you. Share that the YMCA is a charity and we do not turn people away due to lack of funds.
100% of dollars raised will go to our Reach Out Annual Campaign.
This is a great fundraiser, allowing kids to solicit donations based on the number of free throws they make within two minutes (in classes March 25th through 31st) or you may ask for a flat donation of any dollar amount.
On the day of your class or league, bring in any pledges or gifts you have received.

Any questions, please email: rossg@hockymca.org (Foxboro), mikem@hockymca.org (Franklin), or kristenmcmillen@hockymca.org (North Attleboro).

North Attleboro Branch has a new name

We are excited to share that our North Attleboro Branch has been renamed the Hurley Family Branch in honor and in tribute to Edwin H. Hurley, retired president & CEO of our YMCA from 1993 to 2022.

We are so grateful to Ed and his family for their dedication, ideals and commitment to strengthening individuals, families and the communities so proudly served for the last 29 years.

Today, friends, family, community leaders, and our Y staff, volunteers and members gathered to re-dedicate our North Attleboro Branch in honor of our longest-serving President & CEO Ed Hurley who retired in March.

You will notice the new branch name on our building – The Hurley Family Branch – as you enter both entrances and as you are greeted into our doors.

We were all so proud to hold this unveiling event and present the new branch name. We look forward to serving everyone in our communities in the spirit of Ed Hurley’s decades of leadership and commitment to making life happier, healthier, and more vibrant for all we serve in the days and years ahead.

Annual Campaign Event held September 15

We held our annual Campaign Breakfast on September 15th at the Gillette Stadium Putnam Club in Foxborough.

Eric Kevorkian, chair of our Board of Directors provided welcoming remarks and noted, “This annual gathering of caring, compassionate members of our community never fails to inspire me, and never fails to remind me of why I’m involved and why what the Y does is so important.”

Our YMCA is more than a place; it is a cause that is committed to strengthening communities. This annual fundraising campaign, known as Reach Out, ensures we continue to address diverse, emerging, and critical human needs across the 15 communities we serve.

Special guest speakers included YMCA friend Norm Bossio and YMCA member Nadine Bullock. Norm shared, “For over 50 years, the Hockomock Area YMCA has had a vision. You’re here today to help with that vision.” During his remarks, Bossio credits his YMCA experiences in his youth for making a difference in his life and making it his mission to continue to help and inspire others.

Board of Director Mary Clermont, our Y’s immediate past chair, commented, “The Hockomock Y is our home and it’s our community. Charity starts here today. People need help and together, we can impact the lives of so many in our community.”

Y member Nadine Bullock addressed the crowd and sharing her own family’s personal YMCA story saying, “The YMCA does a lot of good for a lot of people. I am one of those people as well.” The Bullock family received a scholarship for their children to attend summer camp sharing, “My children needed to have fun in a place with understanding, helpful people. They needed to be doing fun things for the sake of childhood itself and to experience joy and laughter. Thank you to all the people who have made camp possible for our family and to each of you for considering a scholarship donation.”

Our Board of Directors issued a $50,000 challenge to event attendees, matching all leadership gifts of $500 or more. Vice Chair of the Y’s Board of Directors Farzin Karim shared her own personal story, “I benefited because someone just like one of you in this room, made a donation to the Y and allowed me to experience camp for a couple of weeks at a local YMCA. And in that experience at the Y, it changed my life. You have an opportunity to change someone’s life this morning and make a difference.”

Our goal is to raise $1.4 million for this year’s campaign. The Breakfast event raised $203,000, bringing the total raised to-date to $1.2 million for this year’s campaign. To make a gift or learn how you can volunteer, visit www.hockymca.org/give

Jim Downs, our CEO thanked attendees for being at this event, believing in and supporting the Y’s mission saying, “Thank you for your trust in our Hockomock Area YMCA. For the last 5 decades, you’ve trusted us to be here when kids and families needed us most and be that critical community safety net. Our Hockomock Area YMCA is something you can always count on.”

The Y provides a safety net for thousands of individuals and families facing challenges. The Y encourages members, volunteers, neighbors and friends in the community to join them in making a gift and raising funds to provide confidential scholarship assistance and program subsidies for those facing challenges. The essence of Reach Out and a cornerstone of the Y’s mission is that nobody is turned away because of inability to pay.

Become A YMCA Volunteer

Charitable giving is vital to the success of our YMCA. Revenue we receive from our daily operations cannot fully fund the incredible needs of those in our community who count on us every day. That’s why YMCA staff and volunteers dedicate time each year to raising awareness, building relationships, and asking for philanthropic support to our annual Reach Out Campaign.

To do our important work as a non-profit committed to the community, we rely on the support and hard work of dedicated volunteers to help us make a difference. Will you join us?

TOGETHER WE’RE STRONGER

Reach Out volunteers are integral to showing others how we positively impact the lives of those around us through telling their own stories, inviting people to engage in our YMCA, and asking for philanthropic investments to help us reach and impact more people.

THE ROLE OF A CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEER:

  • Attend an informational meeting with YMCA staff to become equipped with the tools you need to be a successful campaign volunteer.
  • Recruit attendees to the Reach Out Campaign Breakfast in June.
  • Educate and advocate for the Y’s cause by sharing with family and friends how our YMCA has impacted our communities.
  • Make a gift to the Y that is meaningful to you.
  • Raise an additional $300 above your personal contribution from your friends, family, co-workers, etc. who believe in the Y’s mission work.
  • Our Reach Out Campaign raises money for families and individuals who could otherwise not fully afford YMCA programs and services or who are in need of essential services.

Thank you for your consideration in joining us in this important effort and volunteer role.

To become a Reach Out Campaign volunteer, please contact Nicole Bartlett, Director of Annual Giving & Special events at nicoleb@hockymca.org or 508-643-5235.
