A Look Back at Summer

THE BEST SUMMER EVER

We’re all so proud of our dedicated camp staff who served for eleven weeks this past summer as young leaders and role models to youth from the 15 communities we are privileged to serve. More than 300 counselors were hired by our YMCA this year and for some, this was their first job.

Many staff members came to our Y as campers and return to make their impact as counselors. To me, that’s a special part of the tradition of summer camp that we celebrate each year.

Enjoy this brief video that highlights a day at summer camp at the Hockomoock Area YMCA. The smiles and laughter are sure to bring a smile to your face. And thank you for all you do in support of our YMCA.

Sincerely,

Ed Hurley

Andrea Ambs bestowed 2017 Legacy of Caring Award

Every year at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, the Hockomock Area YMCA holds its annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon to recognize valued employees who have worked at the YMCA for 10 years or more. 129 staff members were celebrated at this year’s luncheon, the group representing 1,887 years of unwavering dedication to the Y. One of those honored employees was Andrea Ambs, who was accorded the Marge Kraskouskas Legacy of Caring Award.

An Invensys Foxboro Branch and North Attleboro Branch fitness trainer for ten years, Andrea is an integral part of wellness programs including LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, diabetes prevention, and group exercise classes.

The award, named for former Hockomock Area YMCA Human Resources Vice President Marge Kraskouskas, recognizes a staff member for unyielding passion and commitment to the mission and values of the Y.

Hockomock Area YMCA President Ed Hurley presented Ambs with the award, remarking that “there are so many things that Andrea has done, and every time I see her the compassion, the passion, and the smile is always there. And I can’t tell you how excited I am to recognize someone who has had a huge impact on our YMCA, on the folks that she works with every day, and on inspiring me.”

Upon receiving the award, Andrea, a Foxboro resident, humbly expressed her surprise. “This is very unexpected, so thank you,” said Ambs. “I feel like I work with all of you who do so much more to deserve this than I do.”

At last year’s event, the Legacy of Caring Award was given to George Johnson Jr. and in 2015, the award was given to Ann Maitland.

Make A Difference

HELP PROVIDE MORE KIDS WITH A SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE

There is something magical about summer camp that every child needs and deserves. Our staff role models provide kids with important social development and life lessons critical to their development. However, many families – for a variety of reasons – do not have the means to provide a summer camp experience for their kids.

You can maximize your impact on kids in our community now more than ever. The Spier Family has announced a summer camp challenge and will match every donation between July 31st and August 14th up to $25,000. With your help and the support from the Spier Family, we look forward to raising $50,000 to provide more kids an opportunity to experience their best summer ever at camp this August.

Our Y is committed to strengthening community and ensuring everyone regardless of ability to pay has the opportunity to thrive. This is our mission and our cause. And with your help another great example of our Y being a place where cause meets community. Together we can make a difference in the lives of local kids and families this summer.

Make Your Gift Today!

For more information, stop by any of our Y branches.

Thank you,

Ed Hurley
