Winter Weigh to Change Program

“The YMCA saved my life” explains Kelly DeMartinis, Hockomock Area YMCA member. “I have many health issues. I brought my cholesterol and trygyceride levels back to normal where before they were very high.”

throughout her 3 sessions on the Weigh to Change program, Kelly lost a total of 42 pounds and 19.5% of body fat by improving her nutrition and exercise.

DeMartinis calls the Y her ‘home away from home.’ She embarked on her weight loss journey on December 31, 2016 and has not only shed pounds and inches but also learned many lessons on living healthier since then. She fuels her body with a protein-rich diet, does not skip meals, reads labels while grocery shopping and now enjoys drinking a lot of water and eating nuts and fruits. “Treat your body like a Ferrari, always pump the good fuel in,” she says.

Our Weigh to Change program offers a great opportunity to support and guide you in your quest to look and feel better. In fact, for 2017 so far (3 sessions @ 10 weeks each), 155 WTC participants lost a total of 1,445 pounds and 1,631 inches

Registration is now open for our winter program.

The 10-week winter Weigh to Change program runs November 20th through January 27th.

Where Family Moments Matter

In today’s world people need a place that is kind, welcoming, and supportive. Our Y is that place-where adults find life balance, children reach their full potential, seniors find camaraderie, and families experience meaningful moments. From A to Z, the Hockomock Area YMCA connects people of all ages and backgrounds to nurture the potential of kids, promote healthy living, and foster social responsibility.

In Aquatics, we teach swimming and water safety, and lead our Adventures in Respect anti-bullying program for students to address bullying through our ropes challenge courses.

There’s Basketball and Boot camp, and our Commitment to Child Protection as well as Confidential financial assistance for membership, programs, childcare and camp.

Our Y offers a Diabetes Prevention program, Enrichment, and quality Education in our licensed infant through school-age childcare which offers iPad curriculum, homework support, nutrition, STEM, swim, and sports.

From Family events and Food Drives, to Gymnastics and Group Exercise, our Y contributes to healthier lives.

Our Y is an Inclusive organization for all men, women, and children and a Nonprofit that has the presence and partnerships to deliver positive change.

We teach Pilates as well as Prescription for a Healthy Lifestyle programs providing health management to address and support specific challenges associated with cancer, heart disease, and pediatric obesity.

Our 2016 Reach Out for Youth and Families campaign provided $2,017,570 in Scholarship aid to help children learn to Swim, play Soccer, perform in Theatre productions, and more. We believe everyone should have such opportunities regardless of ability to pay.

Each year, hundreds of dedicated Volunteers give time, talent, and treasure to help our Y make an impact in the 15 communities we serve.

“The Hockomock Y is a welcoming environment, very open and engaging, where people walk by and they smile,” explains Y member Kofi Dwomoh.

5 Days of Action: Protect their only childhood

In recognition of April as Child Sexual Abuse Prevention month, the Hockomock Area YMCA will be joining other Y’s across Massachusetts and the nation in promoting “Five Days of Action Initiative” from April 24-28, 2017.

This month and throughout the year, we encourage all individuals and organizations to play a role in making our local communities a better place for children and families. Together we can prevent child sexual abuse by ensuring that adults have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly.

1 in 10 children experiences the trauma of child sexual abuse before age 18, typically at the hand of someone they know and trust. As adults we are responsible for protecting children and educating ourselves to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The Hockomock Area YMCA partners with Darkness to Light to provide child abuse prevention training to adults that strengthens our community and kips our kids safe.

During the week of April 24th, we will share information and resources with our members and the community on how to keep our children safe.

Information will be shared through a variety of methods such as email blasts, social media, and within our facilities. Please consider supporting the movement of child sexual abuse prevention by sharing the information with family and friends and participating in our daily calls to action.

During the week in our branches:

We will ask members, staff, and volunteers to sign a pledge to protect children. We will display these signed pledges throughout our branches during the week to promote and emphasis the importance of community based prevention.

Plant a pinwheel today! Did you know that the pinwheel is a symbol of a carefree, happy childhood? Every child deserves that kind of childhood. When you visit any of our branches, take a pinwheel and plant it in your yard. Pinwheel planting is designed to inspire all of us to take action in support of children and families during Child Abuse Prevention month.

Take the Darkness to Light Online Training. 5% of a community trained in Child Protection to be aware and responsive is the tipping point to make a positive change*. (Statistic from Darkness to Light)

We will provide resources to help educate, spread awareness, and prevent child sexual abuse. With proper policies, procedures, and protocols, we can all minimize the risk and deny an offender the access to harm children. Here are links to some of those resources:
