Mental Health at our Y

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING NETWORK

The Hockomock Area YMCA’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Network provides a safe space for parents and/or caregiver discussion around youth mental well-being strategies.

What is the SEL Network?
Monthly, open dialogue sessions with topics including emotional intelligence, resiliency, compromise, expressing emotions and social emotional behaviors, talking about mental health, and emotional management for caregivers and children. Sessions are designed to discuss topics and challenges in general terms, including skills and techniques to apply in the home and providing resources for caregivers. The network will not provide assessment, diagnosis, direct support, or speak about individual children. Our YMCA’s Social Worker, Brynne Kirwan, LCSW, and Sarah Henesey, Senior Director of Inclusion, will facilitate the sessions.

Who can join the SEL Network?

Annual Campaign Event held September 15

We held our annual Campaign Breakfast on September 15th at the Gillette Stadium Putnam Club in Foxborough.

Eric Kevorkian, chair of our Board of Directors provided welcoming remarks and noted, “This annual gathering of caring, compassionate members of our community never fails to inspire me, and never fails to remind me of why I’m involved and why what the Y does is so important.”

Our YMCA is more than a place; it is a cause that is committed to strengthening communities. This annual fundraising campaign, known as Reach Out, ensures we continue to address diverse, emerging, and critical human needs across the 15 communities we serve.

Special guest speakers included YMCA friend Norm Bossio and YMCA member Nadine Bullock. Norm shared, “For over 50 years, the Hockomock Area YMCA has had a vision. You’re here today to help with that vision.” During his remarks, Bossio credits his YMCA experiences in his youth for making a difference in his life and making it his mission to continue to help and inspire others.

Board of Director Mary Clermont, our Y’s immediate past chair, commented, “The Hockomock Y is our home and it’s our community. Charity starts here today. People need help and together, we can impact the lives of so many in our community.”

Y member Nadine Bullock addressed the crowd and sharing her own family’s personal YMCA story saying, “The YMCA does a lot of good for a lot of people. I am one of those people as well.” The Bullock family received a scholarship for their children to attend summer camp sharing, “My children needed to have fun in a place with understanding, helpful people. They needed to be doing fun things for the sake of childhood itself and to experience joy and laughter. Thank you to all the people who have made camp possible for our family and to each of you for considering a scholarship donation.”

Our Board of Directors issued a $50,000 challenge to event attendees, matching all leadership gifts of $500 or more. Vice Chair of the Y’s Board of Directors Farzin Karim shared her own personal story, “I benefited because someone just like one of you in this room, made a donation to the Y and allowed me to experience camp for a couple of weeks at a local YMCA. And in that experience at the Y, it changed my life. You have an opportunity to change someone’s life this morning and make a difference.”

Our goal is to raise $1.4 million for this year’s campaign. The Breakfast event raised $203,000, bringing the total raised to-date to $1.2 million for this year’s campaign. To make a gift or learn how you can volunteer, visit www.hockymca.org/give

Jim Downs, our CEO thanked attendees for being at this event, believing in and supporting the Y’s mission saying, “Thank you for your trust in our Hockomock Area YMCA. For the last 5 decades, you’ve trusted us to be here when kids and families needed us most and be that critical community safety net. Our Hockomock Area YMCA is something you can always count on.”

The Y provides a safety net for thousands of individuals and families facing challenges. The Y encourages members, volunteers, neighbors and friends in the community to join them in making a gift and raising funds to provide confidential scholarship assistance and program subsidies for those facing challenges. The essence of Reach Out and a cornerstone of the Y’s mission is that nobody is turned away because of inability to pay.

Preventing Diabetes is Possible. We Can Help

Diabetes is a serious condition that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects more than 29 million people.

Prediabetes may be reversible; diabetes has no cure.

The Hockomock Area YMCA runs a Diabetes Prevention Program designed to support adults that are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and reduce their risk for developing the disease. Classes currently enrolling for the Fall. Virtual & in-person options are available.

This 1-year program, consisting of 25 sessions, provides a welcoming environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity. The classroom-based program is facilitated by a Y-USA trained facilitator at the Hockomock Area YMCA which has facilities in North Attleboro, Foxboro and Franklin.

To learn more about the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program and other Prescription for a Healthy Lifestyle Programs, please contact donnah@hockymca.org or call 508-643-5271.

Individuals are encouraged to assess their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by taking a simple test at YMCA.net/diabetes.

Through this assessment, visitors can also learn how lifestyle choices and family history help determine the ultimate risk for developing the disease. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include race, age, weight and activity level. If a person is at risk, a diabetes screening conducted by a physician can confirm a diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis.

The Hockomock Area YMCA is helping to improve health through their Prescription for a Healthy Lifestyles program which includes the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program. These supportive, small group physical activity programs are making a positive difference in the lives of individuals diagnosed with or at risk of a chronic disease.

Making lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

Eat fruits and vegetables every day.
Choose fish, lean meats and poultry without skin.
Aim for whole grains with every meal.
Be moderately active at least 30 minutes per day five days a week.
Choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar.
Speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history or are overweight.

Week of Giving

TOGETHER WE CHANGE LIVES

Our Week of Giving campaign is 7 days devoted to philanthropy, advancing our mission and making an impact on children and families in our communities.

Each year our YMCA raises awareness and critical funds in our branches through a Week of Giving campaign. This year’s campaign runs June 6 – 12.

All donations will help us advance our mission and impact even more people in our communities.

The positive impact of the YMCA is needed now more than ever. With your help, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of age, ability, income or background, has what they need to learn, grow and thrive with the Y’s support.

Your support, of any area of the YMCA that is meaningful to you, helps ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience the Y—making our community stronger.

  • Reach Out is our Y’s annual campaign that ensures we continue to address diverse, emerging, and critical human needs across the 15 communities we serve.
  • In 2021, our YMCA provided $2.1 million in confidential scholarships and program subsidies to our neighbors in need to experience our YMCA programs and services regardless of ability to pay.
  • More than 1,425 of our area youth benefit from a day camp experience at our Y branches every day in the summer …creating memories & friendships that will last a lifetime and experiencing their Best Summer Ever. 23% of our campers receive confidential scholarship assistance made possible by the support of friends and donors like you.

It’s the generosity of people like you that helps ensure a Y experience is available to all. With help from the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Annual Reach Out Campaign, Lily was able to enjoy and thrive at summer camp.

Watch Lily’s camp journey at our YMCA.

Lily’s grandmother Terry shares: The Y has provided so many opportunities that I couldn’t possibly have offered my granddaughter. Lily could not be in a better, safer, more nurturing place than at the Hockomock Y.

Become A YMCA Volunteer

Charitable giving is vital to the success of our YMCA. Revenue we receive from our daily operations cannot fully fund the incredible needs of those in our community who count on us every day. That’s why YMCA staff and volunteers dedicate time each year to raising awareness, building relationships, and asking for philanthropic support to our annual Reach Out Campaign.

To do our important work as a non-profit committed to the community, we rely on the support and hard work of dedicated volunteers to help us make a difference. Will you join us?

TOGETHER WE’RE STRONGER

Reach Out volunteers are integral to showing others how we positively impact the lives of those around us through telling their own stories, inviting people to engage in our YMCA, and asking for philanthropic investments to help us reach and impact more people.

THE ROLE OF A CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEER:

  • Attend an informational meeting with YMCA staff to become equipped with the tools you need to be a successful campaign volunteer.
  • Recruit attendees to the Reach Out Campaign Breakfast in June.
  • Educate and advocate for the Y’s cause by sharing with family and friends how our YMCA has impacted our communities.
  • Make a gift to the Y that is meaningful to you.
  • Raise an additional $300 above your personal contribution from your friends, family, co-workers, etc. who believe in the Y’s mission work.
  • Our Reach Out Campaign raises money for families and individuals who could otherwise not fully afford YMCA programs and services or who are in need of essential services.

Thank you for your consideration in joining us in this important effort and volunteer role.

To become a Reach Out Campaign volunteer, please contact Nicole Bartlett, Director of Annual Giving & Special events at nicoleb@hockymca.org or 508-643-5235.

Weigh to Change Program

Our Weigh to Change program will support and guide you in your quest to look and feel better.

The program is offered for all our Y branches with virtual and in-person options. The 10-week winter program will run from January 17th through March 26th. We also have programs offered in the Spring and throughout 2022 to fit your schedule.

Several Weigh-to-Changers shared their thoughts on the program.

“Weigh to Change taught me how to eat healthier and realize what I was putting in my body. I loved learning new exercises that I could do at home too. Since I started WTC, I am down 50 pounds by continuing to follow everything I learned. I can’t thank the Y and all of the WTC staff enough!” ~ Katelyn, WTC Participant

“Weigh to Change is a great program. You get to meet with a nutritionist, a one-on-one certified trainer, and have group workouts with other trainers to keep you accountable. I keep coming back to the program. I have improved my form and my range of motion from a hurt shoulder.” ~ Kelsey, WTC Participant

“It’s not a program-it’s a lifestyle boost! Every aspect of your life- physical, mental and social is positively effected. You gain knowledge and friendships from other members and staff. Life changing. Immersive.” ~ Christine, WTC Participant

“The WTC program taught me to stop fad dieting, stop calorie counting and stop watching the scale. It taught me how to prepare and enjoy eating delicious healthy meals while allowing for eating something I enjoyed, in moderation, without the guilt. It taught me the importance of being active at least 30 minutes a day by offering a variety of workouts so I could find the ones I enjoyed and would continue to do on my own. It taught me that, in addition to eating healthy and being active each day, it’s also important to get 8 hours of sleep each night to re-energize my body. The takeaway for me was finding Balance in my life. Thank you to everyone at the YMCA!” ~ Renee, WTC Participant

The WTC program provides support and education in both fitness and nutrition. By combining physical training and better nutrition, participants benefit in the most successful way to achieve weight loss. Participants will be challenged throughout the ten weeks with personal training, nutrition guidance, group workouts, and friendly challenge competitions.

Our Weigh to Change Program includes:

  • 30-Minute Weekly Personal Training Session each week
  • Nutrition Consults & Accountability Check-In’s
  • Pre & Post Styku Body Measurement Scans
  • Four Nutrition/Wellness Workshops
  • Private Weigh to Change ONLY Small Group Workouts
  • Group Step Challenge
  • Private Facebook Group

Cost:
$499/Hockomock Area YMCA Members
$599/Nonmembers
Over an $800 value. Payment plans available. 10% discount for Alumni.

For more information or questions, please contact Jocelyn Lubniewski at jocelynl@hockymca.org or call 508-643-5263.

“We definitely recommend this program to anyone who is serious about making a commitment to how they want to look and feel about their life,” recommends Mike & Marilyn, WTC participants.
