LAP SWIM

Water exercise, adult swim lessons (it's NEVER too late) and adapted exercise for those with disabilities or in rehabilitation are some of the water-based activities available at the Y.

EXERCISE SWIMMING

Lap swim offers swimmers a great cardiovascular workout. Whatever pace you work at, come enjoy our relaxing waters and get healthier at the same time.

We do provide equipment for the pool to make lap swimming more enjoyable and to help vary the challenge involved. For example, kickboards and pull buoys are available. A kickboard allows you to swim using only your legs, building leg strength and focusing stroke attention on your kick. The pull buoys immobilize your legs during the stroke, so laps with pull buoys emphasize arm strokes. Ask a lifeguard if you are not sure where they are located.

SCHEDULED LAP SWIM LANES

Most of the time, we reserve lane space in our pools for lap and exercise swimmers. For your convenience, our Pool Schedule indicates the number of reserved lanes at particular times throughout the day, to help members plan activities.

LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE

We encourage circle swimming if more than one person is using a lane. This will create a nice flow, and swimmmers can more easily maintain space for clean strokes.

  • Please notify all other swimmers in a lane before starting to swim.
  • When lap swimming with 2 swimmers in a lane: Split the lane in half; When lap swimming with 3 or more swimmers per lane: CIRCLE swim staying to the right.
  • All ages are welcome to participate as long as they are swimming laps. Children must be able to swim 50 yards non-stop.
  • Choose a lap lane w/swimmers of similar speed/ ability when possible.
  • When 4 or more lanes are available, 1 lane will be designated for slower activities/exercises.
