MS WELLNESS

We provide comprehensive support programs to address specific challenges associated with diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

LIVING BETTER WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

MS Wellness Program is for individuals living with multiple sclerosis. Our goal, working with our community health partners, including the National MS Society Greater New England Chapter, is to help the participants develop long-term healthy habits that can mitigate symptoms and complications of MS. Although research shows that exercise will not slow the progression of the disease, it can decrease complications arising from muscular fatigue, weakness, and spasticity.

The Y’s MS Wellness program is facilitated by a nationally certified personal trainer who is trained by the National MS Society, Greater New England Chapter to better understand the needs of individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

“It gives me control and some say in my life; whereas MS may have a mind of its own. I could be fine in 5 years, in 10 years, or I could have another attack tomorrow. But today, I’m doing everything in my power to be healthy. Exercise at the Hockomock Y is a big part of that.”

HOW MS WELLNESS WORKS

This program is for individuals living with multiple sclerosis, with a focus on regularly participating in physical activity and improved nutrition. This supportive program facilitated by a specially trained Y staff team helps to encourage individuals with multiple sclerosis to achieve a healthier lifestyle, and elevate their sense of well-being and independence. Before program placement, participants will work with staff to assess needs and goals to create a customized program.

The goal of the 12 week program is to help sustain the long-term healthy habits through weekly 1 hour sessions.

The Hockomock Area YMCA employs a team of certified fitness and nutrition professionals who provide individualized instruction, guidance, and motivation to the participant. Included in this program is a no charge twelve-week membership for the participant and his/her family.
