The Integration Initiative
What is it?
The Integration Initiative seeks to provide individuals with special needs an opportunity to participate with typically developing peers in Y programs and activities. The Initiative’s goals are:
• Improved social skills and self confidence
• Increased physical activity and independence
• Enhanced mutual respect among people of all abilities
How does it work?
Each branch has a professional integration coordinator who partners with families and individuals to facilitate successful participation at the Y. Interested participants should begin by completing an enrollment form, available at any Hockomock Area YMCA branch. The integration coordinator will contact you to assist in customizing your Y experience. There is no cost for enrollment in the Integration Initiative.
What is available?
Integrated Programs: Individuals with special needs participate in Y programs and activities with their typically developing peers.
Springboard: Integrated programs for children of all abilities who need introductory skills in a smaller instructor-to-participant ratio. Instructors have experience in working with individuals with special needs.
Specialty Courses: Customized activities and classes for individuals with special needs.
How is the initiative funded?
The Hockomock Area YMCA funds the Integration Initiative through an Association-wide gala event—Legends Ball, a premier golf event—Legends Golf Classic at TPC Boston, as well as through corporate and foundation grant awards. Additionally, the Integration Initiative is one of four, core strategic initiatives identified for support through our YMCA’s annual sustaining campaign, Reach Out For Youth & Families.
