Healthy Futures at Hockomock Area YMCA
In the spirit of community involvement & guided by the YMCA's Activate America Initiative, Healthy Futures addresses the epidemic of childhood obesity through a collective community response.
Our Healthy Futures Initiative is our Y’s commitment to reduce inactivity and poor nutrition in the fifteen communities we serve through programs, projects and policies. Driven by the leading
principles of our Leadership Council, our local community-driven task forces develop community action plans focused on schools, workplace and the community-at-large. Healthy Futures incorporates prevention and intervention based strategies to ensure we are supporting all youth and families in our communities.
Healthy Futures Programs include:
Intervention-based programs
such as Promoting Achievable Change (PAC), a physician-referred 12-week program for youth 7 – 14 years old -- designed to improve nutritional habits and increase physical activity.
Prevention-based programs and strategies
such as Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) and YMCA's Food and Fun curriculum, used by our child care and nursery school; association-wide food and beverage policy; and the Healthy Futures Harvest Garden Project.
Community and School-based programs
such as Nutrition Detectives, offered at no cost to local elementary schools for third grade classes; Safe Routes to School Walk to School programs; and community gardens.
Family-based programs
such as Healthy Futures Family, which includes a nutritious meal, fun activities, and tips to take home.
